I'll give a reasonable answer...
It's because Cummings is a more familiar name, as in Bob Cummings, an old entertainer/actor.
Also, if their buddies pronounce it that way, if you say Cummins then you're different from them and considered snooty. Then you become an outcast. I can't say I've ever heard it mispronounced in a Cummins shop.
I don't know if they actually know how to spell it, but I hear it alot, so in conversation I'll distinctly say Cummins a few times hoping they pick up on it. They never do.
I was just in a conversation with someone about my Discover pass. She kept calling it a Discovery pass, even after I said Discover. Spelling and pronunciation are not top priorities with many.
