I suspect some women have a subconscious fear of falling in. It's also very unpleasant to deal with a small child sitting on one.
We have similar thoughts. When I go into a porta potty for #1 the first thing I do it close the lid on the seat if it has one. I'm always thinking about dropping something in the tank.
