wifi where?

Leaving soon for about a month, and this time I have us staying almost exclusively in state parks.
This is both good and bad, since I usually pay all our bills on-line while on extended trips, but there's no WiFi at the stops we have planned.
I know about McDonald's and Starbucks, but if you don't have your own hotspot through your phone, where do you access the internet when on the road?

I don't think those are "open". the ones that I have encountered require a password.
  • *McDs
    *Starbucks
    *almost any coffee shop
*public libraries (where it's often left on and you can pick it up outside the building, after library hours)
    *laundromats
    *lots of truckstops
*fast food places associated with quick-stop markets/gas stations--in my area there are a lot of Subways that do this

There are also "wifi finder" apps for Android & Iphone.
  • I have used wifi in libraries before. Reasonable speed on the ones we have used.
  • I bought a Data-Link antenna from Staples that plugs in thru a USB port. That will boost an available signal significantly. Then a city library or the usual suspects, but it means you can be in your RV. The one I bought will also show all available wifi hotspots.

  • I use easy tether, a free program (unless you need secure capabilities) that can be found at amazon or googleplay.

You install the program on your phone, then install a sub program to your laptop.

Honestly, the connection through my phone is faster than any wifi I have found in campgrounds or places like starbucks and mcdonalds. If I'm not streaming video, with daily 2 hour usage, I go through about 3G per month. If I stream movies (works really well) it run from 5G to 15G in a month.

I have not found anything that works better, especially sinnce my phone has an unlimited data plan.

    Good Luck!
  • There is an iPhone app called WiFi Finder that does a pretty good job finding available hot spots.

Some public libraries and restaurants (Starbucks) also have free hotspots, sometimes needing a password.

If you use xfinity their open hotspots are starting to show up all over the place, I see them quite often when scanning with the WiFi Ranger.
