Winter mouse prevention

New to RVing and I would like to find out what is the best mouse invasion preventer while camper is stored outside for the winter.
I've heard dryer sheets work but I haven't tried it yet.

I have been using this product recently. So far so good. Has a strong long lasting smell that is pleasant.

    Fresh Cab Botanical

Edit: Single box quantities are available in stores

x2 We have used for 7 years no mice.
  • I've been hearing about Cab Fresh for ever it seems.
Looked on line and found 12.98 for four pack on Amazon.
Too much trouble to order so I looked at Tractor Supply and they want local zip for local pricing. Not a good sign.
Looked under Ace Hdwy and they 107.98 for a 6 pack.
That's one heck of a spread and tooo toooo espensive.
Are there more than one kind?
  • I store my rig near a large, feral cat colony. Something nice about seeing a cat zoom under your TT, then toddle out with a big, plump rat in its mouth.
  • Here's what I've been doing-it works. Do NOT park RV near long grass/weeds/trash/water or under trees. Cement pad is the best.

Clean it super-well. In and out. Remove all food,(even cans and bottles), soap, candles, firewood, aerosol cans. Remove all linens/throw rugs/shoes/ clothes-wash them before you put them back. Wipe down all surfaces/inside cupboards. IOW: Remove anything that smells attractive to insects/rodents.
I do use those electronic things that you plug it,(you need to have power to the coach).
I put rubber snakes and rubber toys with BIG eyes under the TT. Sounds funny, but the mice don't know they're fake.
I do check for any holes. I put steel wool inside a plastic bag, (so it doesn't rust/stain), and plug the holes.
If you bait traps with peanut butter, etc. You are just attacking them with the scent of the bait. Poison baits are very dangerous and also have an attractant to get them to take the bait.
So far, so good doing it this way. In the spring- I have a nice. mouse/insect-free TT that doesn't smell like cat pee or moth balls.
  • I didnt have a problem with winter mice. My problem was with Summer mice.

Did not have any luck with any of the sprays and other stinky stuff - the only things that worked were snap traps and sealing up the little door for the power cord. I cut off the power cord and installed a twist/lock connector on the side of the camper and on the end of the power cord where I cut it off.

Not sure if city mice or country mice are different. Can anyone shine a light on that?

I filled the openings underneath ours' with a combination of steel wool and later added some spray foam. No mice since using the steel wool.

I hope you realize that use of steel wool is absolutely a no-no. It rusts. It will rust, stain, and break down.

X2. That's why I use copper wool. You can find it at Walmart by the kitchen sponges and cleaning pads.

I did not think of it rusting but have not had any problems yet. I'll keep an eye on it and replace with copper or something else when needed. Thanks.
  • I have used Cab Fresh for several years. It seems to work quite well. I put several pouches in, on paper plates, so it does not stain the floor and call it good.
    So far so good!
  • The dryer sheets are supposed to be a myth. I have never tried them but heard at a campground someone say that mice had made a nest of dryer sheets in their TT.
  • We just had our first mouse encounter this summer. Little bugger made his nest in my handtowels and pooped all over the dryer sheets. My faith in that method is shot. We set out the capture traps (all in one, don't have to touch the durn thing). Three days later we had a very chubby mouse in a trap.
  • Dryer sheets lose their efficacy way to quick to be effective over period of time. Not long before they smell a strong as kleenex..
