Winterizing Air vs Antifreeze

I thought I would start a discussion on blowing the trailer water lines out with air vs pumping anti freeze into the lines.

I have done both. When I blow out with air I do fill the p traps with antifreeze.

No disrespect intended to the OP but I am sure this subject has been brought up multiple times every season...I have seen it at least a half dozen threads on the subject since I joined a couple months ago.

Find it odd that the OP has been a member for several years and I would guess very proficient with the workings of campers yet posts the new thread...is this something new? What has been done normally in the past?

No conspiracy here. I have done it both ways over the years. I just bought a new TT and was just trying to land on one method and was looking for a conscientious for the preferred method..

When I drain the system with my low point drains, then blow out the lines, I get a lot of water coming out the bathroom sink hot water faucet. Yes, the heater is bypassed.

All RVs are not the same.
  • Really depends on how well your rig is designed. Mine has two low point drains so I use air exclusively, except for the drain traps. I have owned rgs where anti freeze was the only way until I put in low point drains that the factory should have installed.

  • From what I've seen, it is a personal choice.
I have also done both, I prefer air only. Some will blow the lines with air and then pump in antifreeze. They feel the antifreeze eliminates the possibility of remaining water and, it lubes the valves.
Some feel it's quicker to add antifreeze than blow out the lines

Others don't like the taste of antifreeze and find it is necessary to flush the lines several times.

Also, some like air only because they will sometimes go camping during the winter. It's easier to get it ready and then winterize when done.

Everyone agrees, use antifreeze in the traps and toilet.

I've used air only for a few years and have had no problems during our Pennsylvania winters.

    Hope this helps.
  • I use both. I just don't trust that I can get all the water out using only air. Also blowing most of the water out leaves less water to dilute the antifreeze.
  • Just wondering if one method is better or preferred over the other.
  • This has been discussed several times in the past few days.
There's not a lot to discuss, some use air, some use the pink stuff and some use both.
We all use pink stuff in the traps and toilet. :)

Did you have a question about the different methods?
Maybe I'm not understanding your post.
