Oil needs to be changed due to several factors, such as: Fuel/Water contamination, Viscosity loss (shear) due to heat/pressure/age, Additive package degradation, Contamination with microscopic metal particles, or because the filter has accumulated enough material to reduce its effectiveness.
Every engine, every driver, and every different oil brand/type will degrade at different rates, so the old "3000 miles" catch-all is not an iron-clad recommendation. If you're concerned about oil change intervals in your new Ford, I'd suggest that you send a sample of the oil off for testing. It's relatively inexpensive, and will give you an accurate picture of the condition of your oil (and what might be in it other than oil).
