I think some context is due here.
In 1971 I had been buying gas for my own cars for 2 years I was a senior in HS. (I had an Austin Healy 3000 which was not good on gas but fast and I also paid for my own gas)
In southern California I paid $.29/gal that is $1.80/gal in 2018 dollars.
So gas HAS gone up but in real terms not by much.
This spring and summer I spent 4 months in Europe and rented cars in France, Italy, Montenegro and Bulgaria and Greece Gas was ALWAYS MORE expensive than diesel and it ranged from 5 to 6 per gallon.
