It is all what you are used to. The US has some of the cheapest fuel in the world.
I pay something like $9USD US gal. I drive a gas sipping Toyota Yaris. Weather permitting & just needing transport around town, which is what the majority of everyones driving is, I ride a 125CC scooter that gets about 100MPG.
Choices.
In the US all I have is my 3500 diesel truck. It is not a daily driver as such but it gets used for everything. The majority of the driving involves the 5er behind it.
Now, if I had a sticks & bricks in the US the truck would not get used except for trips or needing it to haul something big. Weather permitting my primary transportation would still be 2 wheels & practical like a 250CC scooter. For all other transport I think I'd have an Outback or similar. No way for having a monster SUV.
