Your definition of quite time (sp)

It's when we decide to try to sleep and the noise keeps us awake. Otherwise, not a big deal. We also try to be more flexible on the weekends or holidays. We are retired and can sleep all week. If people want to stay up late around a campfire and talk that's ok with us.

Our park is 11pm and we have neighbors that are up late past that all the time and of course weekends loud and alcohol driven. Security drives around the park at 11pm and stop when they see a fire to listen for any extra noise. Seems if a few people are enjoying a fire and talking they don't bother them.

For the most part the neighbors are okay. I sleep with a fan on and they never wake me up. But when the misses sleeps alone she doesn't and gets kept up by them. Although we know we can call management they haven't been up so late we have had to consider this.

From my experience working security when I was young it's really up to the person how "by the book" you want to be. Being polite and honest goes a long way but sometimes you'll run into a wannabe cop weather security is in plain clothes or uniform.

8 people around a campfire talking doesn't bother me much but I am inside a RV with insulation and dual paned windows, but remember that the guy trying to be heard by the guy across the campfire has to talk loud enough that if there are tenters in the next site they won't be able to help but hear him.
Unfortunately though most of the time (as mentioned above) it seems that if there are 8 people around a campfire that late there is probably some alcohol involved and then it seems to be louder than it should be, so even if it was not the case in your particular incident, it has jaded several people into feeling that that many around a campfire after quiet hours is already a violation.

I think people who don't camp a lot often don't realise how far sound carries when there are not solid, insulated, wood or brick walls around them. Altitude, or alcohol, make this worse.

As volunteers we had to deal with this a lot.

- each park will have their own definition. Read all the rules when you get to the park so there are no surprises

- there will be a designated time period to quiet down

- Conversations or other noise should not carry to the next campsite

- children should not still be running around playing loudly.

- dogs should not be barking needlessly

- be considerate of others. Remember, others will not be on your time schedule. Perhaps they drove a long day, maybe they have to leave early or perhaps infants/toddlers need to sleep - not everyone can sleep with noise outside.

For me, as long as it is conversational voices I don't consider it a violation. People have different voices and not every person can whisper and not every person can hear a whisper and voices travel naturally. When it climbs to an agitated tone, includes shouting/hollering/whooping/cackling/etc., or consists of offensive/abusive content then it passes the line (in my opinion).

Quiet Time

The period designated between such and such hours when everybody should be QUIET so as NOT to disturb others camping in close proximity.

I have neighbors that gather on weekend for cook out........large family group several generations. 20 of them can be sitting out and hardly hear them

A co-worker, his 2 brothers and Dad get together and you can hear them talking in THEIR normal voice 2 blocks away...they are ALL LOUD talkers.

Quiet Time.....you know when it is NOT being quiet. Subjective YES.
BUT you know when you hear it

Talking is OK. Talking loudly enough that every site around you can join in the conversation if they like, is NOT OK.

Most people don't realize how voices can carry in the absence of road and electronic noise. And many many people don't know how to talk quietly.

If it can be heard from the road or another site, that's not quiet, although it would take a strict host to call it a violation. A group of people around a camp fire do tend to whoop it up now and then, while quietly chatting most of the time. Screaming kids in a tent can be pretty distracting too. In my humble opinion; anything making noise that's not mechanical or electronic should be easy to tolerate.

What about those folks that insist on driving at night to "avoid the traffic", so they pull in with their diesel rig at 11pm. Not only do I get to hear their "LOOK!! AT!! MY!! DIESEL!!" powerstroking itself while they set up, I get to smell that disgusting odor of half burnt fuel. Late arrivals should count as a violation of the quiet hours policy.

Is it a slow day for posts on the forum, need to stir the pot and get the trolls fired up? Did I do good? Who has the popcorn?
