I start the tiny Harbor Fright 2-cycle with voltage on one the Megawatts dialed way back. When the generator warms up I tweak the voltage control to just cause the generator to load too much
Wait until the generator is running for awhile at that setting then tweak it again.
Mex nailed it above. That's exactly the way to get the maximum charge rate possible out of a generator-battery combination. IMHO, this is the best bang for the buck method to charge RV batteries using a small easy to handle generator with minimum generator fuel, with (potentially) minimum generator noise, and when solar isn't available or won't work.
I'd be hard put indeed to fit 650 watts of solar on our RV ... but using the method above I could easily get 650 watts worth of battery charging - for around 5 hours at a constant 54 dB sound level - out of my 650 watt four cycle generator's 0.51 gallon regular gas fuel tank. A little Honda EU1000i might be an even better choice because it would provide more amps and is so light in weight ... although probably it would run at a louder noise level.

Mex, you are driving everyone crazy with that photo. It says right on it that it goes from 10-13.8v, but you keep saying it goes to 15 something. Is that the wrong photo for the one you mean?
I noticed the same thing ... but take a look at this web site and read their description of the S-350-12 ... in yellow writing on the left side of the page a little way down from the top: http://www.megawattpowersupplies.com/
