This reply may be "off the wall", but considering you said this might be used for an emergency off a small car battery, why wouldn't you just use the "el-cheapo" inverter just purchased a month or two ago to power the light?
The small inverter and light combined might be 2.5 amps @12.5 volts. Not much is going to be saved in the modification. I assume you are just doing it for the fun of it (experiment).
You could have used your trusty transformer, and a multi-meter, to see how far you could lower the voltage, dc, to still get the required light output wanted, before actual modifying.
