12 Volt freezer? Is this an option?

As we all know, our freezers are notoriously small unless you have one of those fancy dancy big honkin things in a triple axle 40 foot 5ver.

Planning a trip in a few days and would like to prepare a bunch of frozen meals I can just thaw and heat up. I'm going to be with a friend in their TT which has your basic small freezer. I eat healthy, they eat junk.

So the question is, anyone here have experience with a small stand alone 12 Volt freezer? I've never researched this or considered it before as I've always cooked as I go.

I'd like to find some small unit I can keep plugged into 12V and have frozen stuff on hand.

Any thoughts?

  • as stated above
12v thermo cooler and 12v compressor driven fridge/freezer
    are (2) different things

HUNDREDS of dollars for a 12v freezer

for one trip, i would not do it
IF you have a use for it on a regular basis in your TT, then its something that might be a worthwhile investment
  • I have an ARB fridge /freezer. It will create ice in the desert. It's really good. Also expensive. Not sure who makes the ARB freezer. The cheap food 12v coolers are typically ok for 30deg temp reduction only. 90deg outside? Your fridge is only 60deg +/-. The expensive units are truly awesome.
  • There's a bunch of options out there. Mainly aimed at boaters. Really efficient compressor based 12v fridge and freezers.

Check out some "overland" videos on YouTube where they cover the gear. Dometic is actually one of the less expensive options surprisingly.
  • Dometic makes 12V powered free-standing units that can either be a fridge or a freezer. They are NOT cheap!!! Friends have one - seem happy with it - but they use it as a fridge in their TC. I have seen folks with small 120V chest freezers in the back of their truck - plug into power when in a CG, run off inverter while travelling. They are pretty well insulated, so can go a while without running. ST
