1992 ford conversion van shifting hard

I had a 1992 Ford conversion van with a 351 eng and 4 speed transmission that I had rebuilt at 160,000 miles before giving it to my son. It now has 189,000 on it and is shifting hard when driving normally in D. It seems to hunt for a gear then bangs into gear. If it is shifted manually from 1 to 2 to 3 it shifts better or if it is floored in D it will shift better. Does any one have any ideas what would cause this? Plugs, wires, cap and rotor were recently changed.

Thanks Super for the replies. Checked at that web site you provided and several are saying that it is a sensor on the differential. I will check that when he gets out of work.
  • If it's the E4OD it's done by computer-the solenoid pack I'm referring to...anyhow, I think they put a few different transmission in the Econoline that year. You may want to check over on TheDieselStop.com Lots of knowledgeable people there and a few trans experts...

Transmission is original rebuilt at 160,000 miles. Towed a 1500 lb boat. The part that is confusing is that it shifts so much better manually than when left in D. Does vacuum control shifting in a 1992 or controlled by computer?
  • Is the trans original? Have you towed with it much? Pretty sure that's got an E4OD in it(for some reason I'm thinking Ford used the C6 also-maybe even the AOD on the 6?)-could be a solenoid pack on an E4OD-I'd have a trans shop check it out.
