1994 Bounder Fleetwood 454 Engine-Start Problems!

Driving down interstate 10 at 70mph everything running well. Engine stopped running, just like turning off ignition. Coasted to side of road. Let it set for a while then tried to start. Would not even fire a cylinder. Long Story- but 3 weeks later still wont start. replaced or checked the following: Spark Plugs, Rotor, dist cap, whole new distributer, ECU with new prom, coil, removed front of engine checked timing chain (ok). Still will not fire let alone start. checked 12 volts to coil (good). No leakage or unusual indication from engine when it quit.... Baffeled 50 yr aviation Mechanic w/IA 3 other mechs with yrs of experence. Diesel,Auto and Aviation mech Baffeled. Any help appreciated...

  • Are the spark plugs firing? Did you check one or more while cranking the engine?
  • We replaced the ECU Computer and also put a new PROM in it.
(BAM 5225). Did not change. ICM was also changed. We actually installed a new complete Distributer with ICM, pick up coil, cap, rotor, and of course set to TDC.
  • We did try starter fluid early on but it didn't seem to do any good. I wanted the first mechanic to pour a little fuel directly into the throttle body area but he never tried that. I know that when we turn on the key the punp delivers fuel to the throttle body area. but now I am questioning whether the oil pressure gauge is working and whether or not the fuel is so lean or being shut off by the system and not getting the AFM that it needs to combust. I have had issues earlier with the oil gauge being erratic?
  • Did you try starter fluid just to make sure it isn't a fuel issue?
  • Yes Compression good on all Cylinders. Fuel pump is suppling fuel to throttle bodies.
  • There should be a fuel pump relay mounted to the right side of the engine on a reinforcing strut. This supplies power to the fuel pump for a few seconds to charge the fuel line. Can you hear the fuel pump running? Without turning to start, turn ignition switch to on, listen closely for relay to drop out. If you hear it, then not issue.
Next is the oil pressure gauge. The fuel pump operation goes through the oil pressure gauge. If the engine does not get oil pressure, the fuel pump does not operate.
Remove air cleaner, check to see if the injectors are spraying fuel into the intake manifold.
Have you checked the fuel filter or replaced it?
