2001 Monaco Dynasty retracting step

I replaced the motor a few years back and the motor will move the step forward and reverse but only when it feels like it. Removed the motor and bench tested it and it's fine.

At the point of failure it was making a whirring noise, it wasn't shutting itself off.

Another guy took the motor ,messed with it and it worked again but seems to lack control, it doesn't know when to stop. Is that what the box underneath does, controls the travel of the motor?

  • Disassembled motor and found this. Slowly eating itself away, metal worm gear and nylon gear configuration.

    Thanks Chris.
  • It pretty much does either work or not- the only way I know if to test the box is with everything else working correctly- the motor does have to draw enough current to shut it off. I have seen this part go bad- the part between the plastic shock absorbers and the gear, where I could just twist the gear without the motor running.

That pic is from this blog post, which doesn't really deal with your situation, but it does give some tear down pictures.
  • So even though the motor bench tests well the problem is most likely in there verses the control box. I haven't heard the sound myself but will be going there today. How can we test the control box? it either works or doesn't?
  • Something is broken meaning what? one of the arms or something inside the motor?
  • If it keeps running, something is broken. The control box shuts the motor off when the current draw gets high- but the motor must stall out at the end of travel for the current to rise enough.
