2012 Cougar Ultra lite dining light repair

The switch went out on our dining light and I didn't mark how I took it apart. Now I'm not sure what wires go where. From the ceiling I have 2 solid white wires that come down together and 2 white/red wires. The lamp has 2 red wires, 2 white wires and the switch has 2 black wires.
  • that one black wire is only a break in the power line. the switch turns the connection of the power to the light. there is only two ways to wire that switch working or backwards. in other words if you put one side or leg to the switch and the other to the other leg, the light will work when you press on, if wired back wards it will come on when you press off. so just reverse the wires and it will work for you.
  • I can't see your wires and your description is pretty weak. I don't know if we are talking a 12V light or a 120V light so it is really hard to give any good advice. Maybe if you could provide some more very detailed information and a sketch it would be better. But in general I can tell you this.
    1. At the switch, all of the ground wires are tied together, bundled up with a wire nut. All of them.
    2. At the switch you should have a "feed" wire, "hot" from the circuit breaker. I don't know what color it is cause it could be red, black, or white depending on 120V or 12V.
    3. The "feed" connects to one of the wires from the switch. Doesn't matter which one.
    4. All of the "loads" to the light (there could be more than one depending on how many "fixtures" are on the light) all go on the other side of the switch.
    5. Switch on the feed lights up the loads. Switch off and the feed is disconnected from the loads.

Now if your actually talking about a two function light such as a fan and light combo unit, that is supposed to work on separate switches then we have to start all over. If the "feed" actually travels to another fixture from this box, and feeds another load somewhere else in the trailer, have to start all over again. That's why I say Not Enough Information to give credible advice.

Can tell from the wires it's 12v, 120v wires don't have multiple colors or tracers.

The solid whites are (-) and the white with red stripes are (+). Connect the whites from the light to the whites in the ceiling, the reds from the light to the red/white wires in the ceiling. This assumes the switch you are taking about in part of the light fixture and not wall mounted.
  • That is how I connected it back together, I'm wondering if it isn't the light fixture itself that is bad. It pops the breaker every time.
  • Can you post a pic of the fixture and the wiring? Also if it's 12v it should be on a fuse not a breaker. Is it a wall switch or is the switch on the fixture?
