2x Blocks Under Jacks Reason??

Just curious,........they give us all the conveniences of home, usually keeping it simple, like hydraulic levelers, that "I" just drive in a camp spot, drop the jacks, let it level, push button the slides out, all w/o ever leaving the drivers seat.
But whats w/ all these "?? " that stop, crawl under the MH to lay down 2x blocks under the jacks ?? The one guy today even put his coveralls and gloves on to do all this.
Are these people ignorant, or just don't know any better ? Just curious, someone must know.

  • You should be using blocks or jack pads of some kind to prevent damage to the RV park pads. The is especially true if the park has asphalt pads and even more important if it's asphalt and quite warm outside. If you are on concrete and you are going to see freezing temperatures the jacks can freeze to the concrete crippling your RV had you had plans to leave. At least with blocks you could raise the jacks and beat the blocks off.
There are a number of reasons to use them and very few reasons not to.

The footprint of our HWH kickdown jacks is very small. Unless the site is paved or very compacted, they'll sink in.

By drilling a 1/2" hole near a corner I have a way to move the 2x blocks around with my awning rod.?ñu
  • In addition to keeping the jacks shorter, the blocks usually have a larger footprint and do not sink in to the ground as much, therefore the setup is again, more stable. So they are not doing anything wrong, maybe just a little more fussy. I bet they watch you and think you are a rookie! lol.
  • My understanding is that some folks put blocks under the leveling jacks to have less movement inside the rig. The theory is that since you're not running out the jack as far, it makes for a more stable platform.

As far as the coveralls and gloves...yuppie city slicker.
