Lucky for us, Mr. Impedance is on duty.
Time to get out the pyrometer and determine if alternator voltage regulator battery charging heats up a battery at maximum charge acceptance at regulated voltage.
hyperbo-theory isn't worth two cents. I'd l-o-v-e to change reality but I cannot.
OEM C rates exist for permanently connected batteries. If you have all the recharging time in the world why not recharge them in say 24 hours? now reconcile this wonderful world of idealism when a #2,000 generator is sucking $2.50/gal fuel.
Inappropriate voltages coupled with inappropriate long charging times is what needs to be avoided. Guessing doesn't cut it.
When I start my Kubota and put all the chargers on line, I frequently see 500+ amperes at 28.8 volts. I trade a minor amount of plate shedding for $3.00 / gallon diesel, and an in-frame rebuild on the 6-cyl engine.
I plotted the correct current for my 24 cells by monitoring cell temps, and gassing of each cell. As they age and antimony packs it's bags and migrates to the negative plates I have to reduce absorbsion voltage setpoint. usually once a year.
