30 Amp Auto Transfer Switch Fail-Safe/Backup

Our first Class C did not have an ATS. It was never that inconvenient to plug the shore tie cable into the generator output socket before traveling, then move it to the campground pedestal on arrival. My nightmare scenario - CG power failure in the middle of the night during a summer thunderstorm - never happened.

Now we have an ATS and I must admit it's really cute. But they aren't bulletproof reliability-wise. I know I could change connections on the ATS to bypass it, leaving it in Generator or Shore Tie mode only. But it's under the bed and behind a trim panel that runs the length of the bed. That's not very good access.

Has anybody added a manual backup feature? I can see where a couple simple switches could be used to restore power, but a simple plan could also result in back-feeding the generator in shore tie mode and the shore tie cable in generator mode.

Boats use a paired switch with a sliding lock that requires one to be OFF when the other is ON. But that switch isn't also trying to work with an ATS wired into the same circuits...

  • j-d you really worry too much. There is NOTHING inherently wrong with an ATS switch. They rarely just "fail". People that have problems, CAUSE the failures. They switch under loads, and since nothing happens each time they do it, they continue until the relay's are pitted and fail. YES, a power surge can burn out the control board to the ATS, but that usually means you will have other appliances also take the hit. Treat your ATS correctly and it will last a very long time. It would be easier and cheaper to just buy an extra ATS and then replace it IF it fails. Trying to add gang switches and breaker type switches and NOT knowing what and how to do it can be dangerous. • Yes, there is a member of the forum that used a good multiple pole switch to manually switch back and forth. Sorry, I'm not well with names and dates. Maybe someone else bookmarked that thread.
  • Hi,

I want nothing to do with a transfer switch. I'd add a female plug before the ATS, a female plug after the ATS and a male plug on the "feed" to the RV.
  • Just get a 2 Pole Double Throw Switch. One position would be Shore Power and the other Generator Power. Most of the Switches can be put in the middle position which would cut off all power.

These are not to expensive and could be hooked up to allow you to get power if the Automatic Gear fails. If it was me I would also install a cut out switch at the Automatic switch to prevent a back feed.

If you are interested I can draw up a diagram for you. Shoot me a PM and I will see what I can come up with. I uses to own a Marine Electrical Company plus I spent may years as a Chief Engineer on Sea Going Vessels so I have worked with a lot of different types of electrical systems.
