Just to keep this tread alive, this isn't RV related but some here seemed interested in 3D printing so I thought I would share.
I was mowing today with my 19 yr old Sears & Roebuck riding mower. The steering has been feeling sloppy but I didn't think much of it. All of the sudden I lost all steering control and the steering wheel would spin around with no resistance at all. DARN!
The pinion was riding below the rack. I realized I can pull up on the steering wheel to engage it enough to get me back to the shop. Now What?
After accessing the situation I determined a spacer somewhere must have gave up and disappeared. AH-HA, I can print something. So I pulled out my calipers, scratched down some measurements and within 30 minutes had this in hand, printed from Proto-Pasta carbon fiber HTPLA
With spacer in hand I wedged a 2X4 under the steering wheel to lift up the shaft so I could install the spacer under the retainer.
The mower was down for under 2 hours before I was back out there mowing. I test drove the new spacer for about 45 minutes to finish the job. So far so good.
