The spacer just supports the shaft. It's resting on a washer under it that takes the friction and wear n tear. I wanted something hard with little cold flow. We'll see how well the carbon fiber holds up. This stuff is rock hard. I got it for free years ago and I owe Proto Pasta a review. They were mailing out free samples of different specialty filaments years ago in return for an honest review. I didn't review this one. Their stuff is expensive, that's my review.
I don't know what failed. Maybe there was a thrust bearing under the pinion. I can't see under there. This old thing has been held together with bubble gum and bailing wire for years. I'm hoping to get 1 more season out of it.
