It sounds like the heater hose may have leaked enough water out to cause the engine to overheat and cause a head gasket, and/or intake gasket failure. Usually the head gasket fails because the head has warped due to the heat. It's also possible that the head could be cracked.
The first thing I would check is the dip stick to see how much water has made it into the oil. If the oil on the stick is clear and clean then you may very well get by with resurfacing the heads and having them magnafluxed for cracks, new gaskets, and reassembling. If the oil on the dipstick is gray and foamy, you have more issues at risk. I'm always hesitant to spend much on patching up an older engine with lots of miles.
Some cases it's best to bite the bullet and find a reputable rebuilder or buy a crate engine and then you know what you have. It's just a much simpler decision when your not stuck out on the road.
