After further inspection I have pulled out the old wiring and will replace it with #8, 3 cond + ground. I understand that the white, neutral has to be able to support the total load, so #10 would not be adequate for 50 amp setup. It will be a rather straight forward install, with only about 4 feet of wire from the breaker to the outlet. I have an elderly neighbor who used to own an electrical contracting company. He says he will be happy to ride up with me and take a look before I do the final connections.
