50 amp outlet

I am getting ready to purchase a new fifth wheel after the first of the year and my question is this:
Should I have a 50 amp outlet installed in my garage or do they sell an adaptor that will go from 110volt (standard outlet) to the 50 amp power cord? I only need the electric to pre chill the refrigerator before our trips.
Thanks for all of your responses as I have gained a lot of valuable information from reading on this site

I installed a 30 amp 120 for my current trailer, but ran 10/3 with ground so I can run 30 amp 220 if I ever get a 50 amp trailer. Granted, it won't get me the full 50 amps at 220, but I can sure run a hell of a lot with 30 amps, when the time comes.

Your RV runs on 110V AC......not 220V. Even 50A RVs are 110V AC
50A is two hots (110V each) with a Neutral and a ground.

    Just don't confuse the two
220V AC is two hots (110V each) and a ground. NO Neutral

  • Will need the two adapters
A 50a to 30a (plug your power cord into it) and then a 30A to 15A adapter (plug 30A adapter into it and then plug into house outlet)

    50A to 30A

    30A to 15A

Don't get one of this 30A to 15A...they are junk

And if you are going to run the fridge........make sure RV is level.
Off level operation will cause damage....gravity flow will be restricted and cause improper fluid of cooling medium which will cause clogging....this damage is accumulative
  • You will want from time to time more power than a standard 15-20 amp circuit can provide. If cost is not a significant factor, install at least a 30 amp circuit. You will want to have a 50->30 amp adapter anyway. Running the AC in the summer while cleaning, vacuuming, running the fridge, etc will tax a 15 amp circuit.
  • A 50 amp outlet would be a great thing to have but it's totally unnecessary for just he ref. and converter.
  • You will likely need 2 adapters. One to take the cord from 50 to 30 and then another that takes the 30 to 15. They are cheap, easy to setup and take up very little space. You are going to need the 50 to 30 anyway for those stays where 50 amp is not available so the only real add-on is the 30/15 adapter.
  • For just the fridge and the converter to charge the batts get an adapter online or Camping World or any RV store. Some Walmart carry them too.
