50A male plug wiring
I am replacing the male end of the plug. Does it matter which post red and black are on i.e. does it have to be the same on the male and female plug as long as ground and neutral are correct? thanks-

Most of us call that a dog bone adapter.
A pig tail has a plug--and bare wires on the other end to connect to an outlet, or a distribution center. That is why there were so many (passionate) responses.
My limited understanding is that a 50 amp RV should attempt to balance the load so that each leg has about the same wattage.

I did a continuity check on my pigtail. The hot side of the 30A male end is connected to both L1-L2 of the 50A female end. Didn't mean to cause a fuss.
