6 volt versus 12 volt HELP

I have 2005 keystone TT I currently have 2 12 volt batteries that are shot. I have enough space for 3 batteries. About half our camping is boondocking. Am I better off replacing with 2 6 volt batteries, or 2 6 volt and 1 12 volt, or just replacing the 2 12 volt. Your advice is much appreciated

  • Thanks for the advice. When boondocking I charge them with a Yamaha ef2000is. At night we are very consertive with the lights ( headlamps mostly) and the heater is the only thing on. I can't find anything else drawing significant power. We have never had problems with these batteries before this weekend. This time 3 nights in a row we went to bed with the meter in the camper saying they were full and then lost power sometime during the night. I thought they might be low on water but checked and they were full. When the camper is stored is has constant shore power.

Two 6s are way easier to charge up

    Please explain that statement.

Two 6s are way easier to charge up and they can take more really deep cycles than 12s can.

You don't say what your daily AH usage is, so there is no way to know if two 6s at 232AH is plenty, or if you do need to go higher. If you do need more AH to support your daily usage, then you are stuck with the three 12s option since you can't have three 6s. You can have two 6s and a 12 but that gets very hands-on to keep going properly, which you may not be "into."

You can get 300AH with two T-1275s but I don't know the price comparison with three 29s. The T-1275s are true deep cycle, not hybrids like the 29s.
  • +1 for 3x G29. WalMart is fine.

Nothing wrong with a pair of GC2.

Now lets verify what you plan to charge them with....

    Hi,

You would be best off with 3 identical 12 volt jars wired in a balanced manner. Group 29 if they will fit may maximize the total number of amp-hours available.

Yep, for the space available 3 GP29s will give you the most AH capacity (about 300AHs). Twin 6 volts is about the same as 3 GP24s and can take abuse better (about 240 AHs).
