  • Hi PT,

    MS web site
    800watts at 12Vdc operation maxes out a 60amp controller
    1600watts at 24vdc operation maxes out a 60amp controller

You might want to go 24 Volt house system if you have room for 1250 watts of array - A little bit of headroom in the controller is always a good thing

Where are you getting a difference between series connected Vs Parallel connected panels?

Watts is Watts - as far as I know

So long as you are within the MAX input Voltage limit - that system you listed has a limited 80Vdc input

You know as well as I do as soon as you remove the awning you will find a need for it .......
  • Hi KJ.

Yes, if I start over I have enough room for 1250 watts on the roof.

The Morning Star string sizing tool, if I remember correctly, says that, with a 12 volt bank, the Tristar MPPT 60 can do 1250 in series, and 1000 in parallel.

Since I rarely (one deployment in 4 years) use the awning I'm considering panels on the passenger's side, while getting rid of the awning. That would allow me to leave the system that has served me so well, but which is too small for full time, in place.

    Hi SMK,

Unfortunately I've purchased the Magnum 3012 hybrid inverter so I'm committed to a 12 volt bank.
  • I was looking at Intronics's website. They -seem- to make their products in Norwood, MA, so they don't seem to be another importer of no-name Chinese stuff.

So far, the Intronics MPPT controller looks pretty good. 80 VDC max for panels, so I can easily parallel identical panels (thinking 3-4 250 watt panels), or put two 36 volt panels in series. This will definitely help compensate for voltage drop through the wiring.

I'd definitely give it a try. Am going to subscribe to this, as this might be right up my alley when I start building a solar trailer later this year.
  • With that battery I would be looking at 24v main bank and inverter.
Morninstar 45a controller gives about 2x the wattage charging 24v.
  • I'm always skeptical of cheap products, and I would be on this one. By comparison, the Ouback 80amp mppt is $565. Fully configurable for just about any situation.

Yours has a max array input voltage of 80, so you won't be running ... to be continued.. have to run.

I think when you open his MH doors it probably looks just like the inside a hugh LIEBERT NXL ONLINE UPS unit with roles of batteries and lots of cables...

Probably has one litle area in the corner with a chair and table and a TV set...

  • OK - I will bite

What do you need greater than 60amps from a solar array for?
Do you have shade free space for greater than 800watts of solar on your RV?

    Inquiring minds want to know

    As a side note
Just completed my WiFi Solar Controller network in the rig
Now when I have nothing better to do I can enjoy a cold beverage outside while monitoring and logging the solar array on the laptop/Ipad - life is GOOD and getting better
