A L T E R N A T E gas guage sender unit

NO I am NOT going to drop that darned great gas tank for the umteenth time. I am not going to put in another defective gas guage sender unit and pull my hair out again 18mo from now.

Yes I know I have crud and rust and water in the tank. Thats what happens on a 95 coach. It just does.

I got so tired of replacing the fuel pump I plumbed an external pump instead. Now I want to find a simple solution to this perennial gas guage sender problem.

any suggestions puleeeze...

  • Instead of jerry rigging something perhaps things would be better to have the tank lined?

even if you attempt a side tank connection you will still end up with crud coming from the original tank messing with your second tank and sender. Besides relocating the sender may end up making it inaccurate.

You can reline the tank yourself or there are places that will reline it for you.

I have used the POR tank liner for a antique car tank, so far after one year the liner is in good shape and no more junk clogging the carb.

Another antique car I have I had bought a rebuilt tank which the repair place cut out and welded in new material to fix the holes. Then they added a liner to the tank. That tank has been in the car for about 15 yrs and still is clean as can be and no leaks.

With tank liners, you must pay attention to following the steps outlined by the instructions. You need to clean, prep then apply.

Professional outfits will typically steam clean the tank, then use the proper tank cleaner then an etchant, then the liner.
  • My coach is a lot older and I have had many of the same problems, most caused by alcohol in the fuel. There are a number of crud and alcohol proof sending units out there, but none for a 6" deep tank (like mine). If your tank is deeper, then the extra tank just for gaging and one of these might work for you. Level Sensors

Plumb a small, new secondary tank of the same height connected to the main tank, and put the sender in there? Easy to swap out if needed.

This is not a bad idea, I have two tanks that are connected with a one inch fuel line and only one sending unit and one fill tube, works great.

The fuel return can still go only to the main tank and the vents just need to be tied together.
