A Really Accurate Fridge Thermometer

Can I get a fridge thermometer that is accurate within +/- 1 deg F without paying hundreds?

The wife has some medication (costing $1500 every 2 weeks --- thank god for company insurance) and it says MUST be kept between 36 to 46 deg. I'm looking at three cheapo thermometers and they differ by about 5 degrees. Doesn't give much confidence.
  • Be aware that a normal refrig temps will vary by 5 - 10 degrees depending on a number of things. Items inside will usually hold their internal temps closer than that. So , thermometer accuracy more than 3-5 degrees should be as good as any. So don't be overly concerned about minor temperature variations as they are normal. What you are concerned about is if the refrig fails to cool for any reason. So what you really need is a sensor with an alarm if the temps get too far out of range. BTW, my insulin needs to be kept cool also, and I usually have several thousand dollars worth in the refrig at any time. At $300 per vial, cooling is vital.
  • As a former Lab Rat, my thoughts are: that's a wide range. I'd probably buy a decent thermometer and aim for the middle. Price and quality usually go together in this space.

But when it comes to monitoring temps in the lab, we didn't have that wide of a range. And I'd turn to some place like Fisher Scientific.

I see a Fridge thermometer for $77. Specs:
    - Probe is sealed in glycol solution
    - Bottle insulates sensor from rapid temperature changes when refrigerator door is opened
    - Monitors high/low readings overnight, on weekend or for any time period - a significant advantage over reading-only glass thermometers
    - Temperature range is -58 to 158°F and -50 to +70°C with a resolution of 0.1 degree and an accuracy of +/- 0.5C
    - Minimum/maximum memory
    - High and low settable alarms

This is the one we have. Been very happy with it so far

  • If your refer does not have a fan inside then search for a battery operated one to keep the temp very even.
I found a great battery operated thermometer with an alarm. The readout is mounted outside and the sensor goes inside of course.
