AC Cycling

Hey gang, need your input.

My living room/kitchen AC unit on my 5th wheel has suddenly decided it won't work correctly. The fan runs but the compressor cycles on and off.

On for 5 seconds, off for 10 seconds, round and round and does no cooling what so ever.

Thoughts?

  • Had an older gentleman who owns his own residential AC service business come out and look at the AC yesterday. Problem ended up being a bad run capacitor for the compressor. Works like a champ now.

We have a single Coleman Mach 15 A/C on our 30 Amp Class C. On a recent trip, the compressor began to cut out after a longer time than yours, more like 20 minutes. Then it could re-start after about 20 minutes to cool off. It was not dirty (have you cleaned the coils on yours?) and was not freezing over. So I tested the Compressor Run Capacitor with my Fluke Meter. Tested Good. Since I had a new spare capacitor on board, I swapped it in. Compressor kept running and sounded better also. I just bought a new capacitor to have another fresh replacement. $15.80 on Amazon, free shipping. Amazon Link Here
40 uF for Compressor combined with 7.5 uF for Fan. Make sure the values match yours. I can't come close to a promise this'll fix it. Odds favor a failed compressor, but for under $20 (maybe $30-something at an appliance parts store) it's surely a cost effective try.
If you want to try this, check back with us on how to handle capacitors.
  • No Freon/410 gas will NOT cause a compressor short cycling. Sinjce you state the compressor does come on and runs for 10 seconds or so, and the unit is 8 years old, I would suspect a BAD compressor pulling excess amps. Possible you have a bad Start/Run capacitor as that will cause your symptoms too. But I look at the AGE of the unit for what I state. Regardless, if you do not have the tools or knowledge, at this point you have to have a professional look at it to determine if it is the Capacitors or the compressor. IF you are a fulltimer or use the RV more than 50% of the year, replacing the RVP/Coleman top unit after 8 years would not be a big waste of money. Doug
  • my though is your gas has leaked out. might call a rv tech, they,ll come to you .
