A/C not cooling well

We have a 31' Jayco travel trailer with a single 15,000 btu A/C. While out west recently, it really struggled to keep the inside cool especially after being on the road 6-8 hours in the heat. With outside temp of 95, it would struggle to keep it below 85 until the sun started going down. Is this common or should I have it checked out?

  • We were in Casa Grande AZ last March 102 degrees no shade our 1 15,0000 couldn't get us cooler than 84 inside. Have a new fiver to pick up at the end of the month 2 ft bigger but 2 AC's. Better insulation and double pane windows should help as well.
  • Of course dirt/dust could have degraded the heat exchange capabilities of the unit. The shroud should be removed and the unit cleaned. This may improve the cooling ability specially if it has never been done.
Heat reflecting Shields can be put in some of the windows to lessen the heat loads.
  • If you pay attention on the road, you will notice that the bus conversion most of the time carry 4 or 5 AC units on the roofs.
That is what it takes to cool well insulated commercial bus in hot weather.
The original bus, engine-operated AC is rated about 40 HP.
  • Pretty common. But thats not to say, if it is a ducted unit that there is not some blockage. One time mine had a piece of foam insulation come loose partially blocking the air outlet. Take thr filter down and take a look.
