A/C short cycling

We found our large roof A/C had tripped its circuit breaker while we were gone from the Rv park. It restarted without a problem. Then during the night, the unit began to turn on and off in a matter of seconds, and would not continue running. we're not sure if the electricity was cutting on and off or not as we sleep without lights during the night. We turned the unit off before it could trip the breaker. My husband says it is probably low of freon. Is that the usual problem or can there be other problems with the unit or with the wall thermostat? We will take it in for repairs if necessary but would like to have an idea of what the problem could be first. Thanks for any information you can give us.

  • I had the same experience in our 2005 coachmen and it turned out to be the thermostat.

I now have a 2012 Sundance and it has a digital thermostat which gives the option of running the fan speed in high, low, or auto, and when in the auto position it will alternate between the high and low speed erraticly, but has never thrown the breaker. It was so annoying I just select the high or low fan speed and no more off on problem.

What's the Make and Model of the Air Conditioner?
    How Old?
Is the Wall Thermostat Battery Powered?
When it starts "in a matter of seconds" can you tell if it's...
    ...only the Fan?
    ...only the Compressor?
    ...both Fan and Compressor?
  • It could be low on refrigerant...but you need to know if the compressor is coming on before it trips. If the compressor doesn't come on and it trips, it may be a capacitor. A little trial and error will tell all.
