acceptable tire age

Six years is right on the cusp of the recommended time frame. Do you feel lucky?

the cost of new tires is CHEAPER than the damage that will hahhen if one blows ,so you make the choice. me I,d buy new maxxis.

I'd replace them....without giving it second thought. Why risk having something screw up your trip and possibly cause more damage costs than what it will be to replace the tires?

Would the peace of mind on a cross country trip be worth the price of new tires?

Honestly, who knows.

The way I look at stuff like this is if I plan on keeping the rig I would replace them, and get the good years out of the new tires for myself. If I was selling the rig next year, I would push them this year.

Your answer depends on the care you have given them to this point.
IF they are always maintained at proper pressure.
IF you kept them covered when not in use.
IF you did not exceed the maximum speed for the tire for prolonged periods.
IF you never pinched them on curbs.
IF they did not see many big pot holes.
If you do not mind being delayed and overcharged because you need a tire on Sunday afternoon in the middle of nowhere and you do not care what tires they will put on your fiver cause "that is all they have in stock" then you should be fine, but if any of the conditions above are not met then change the tires out

I would run them.

If you keep then protected from UV, no problem up to 10 years.
I had 25 years old tires on utility trailer and they never blow. Cheap Chinese stuff.

Agree with all above! Bought a tow dolly last year. Was getting ready for a 3000 mile road trip and had five year old tires that looked new. I changed them out plus a spare.

So 6 year old tires. They are just looking for a place to blow. prolly on the interstate at 65 MPH out in the middle of no where. I personally would not go out of town with 6 year old tires. but then I wouldn't go with 5 year old tires either. 4 years is my max, and I get concerned at that.
