Ok, that worked.
So the 2 wooden ribs that are running front to back (up/down in the pict) I've added to stiffen up the front area over the bed and to frame in a Fantastic Fan that I've wanted to add for some time. I figured if I were to ever add one, now's the time to do it.
The front white board (bottom in the pict) is a PVC board. It's replacing the problem that lead me down this road in the first place. The PVC board cuts like wood, looks good, doesn't need paint, won't rot, and is similar in weight to a real 1x board. I made a number of cuts to it to get it to fit in place just right and then I sanded the front edge so that it matched the contours of the side walls.
