Air Conditioner

I have a 2005 Open Road fifth wheel. The AC was "freezing up" not blowing very much air & not cold. I would turn off for awhile and would be ok. Now it is tripping the breaker too. I am a fairly handy and tried to read on the forum all I could. I have cleaned the "fins" and washed things down up top (I hate climbing up there by the way!) there is a wire that comes out of a control box that just hangs there. Have no idea what that is (a sensor of some sort?) ideas on what else I should do or where I should start now? You all have great help in the past and I appreciate all your help in advance.
  • Is the compressor cycling on/off like it normally does? If not, you may have an electrical contactor that is sticking; this in turn would not allow the compressor to kick off. I wish I could tell you where the contactor is located, but I am not sure. My guess is that it is near the compressor. Be safe, turn the power off to the compressor before pocking around on the electricals. I highly recommended that you test the circuit first with a multi-tester first!
  • Thanks gat75. It seems to have a split personality. It goes on & off repeatedly sometimes & other times its like its stuck on. Neighbor is electrician so I will have him help me test. Thanks again. There was talk in earlier post of a freeze sensor. Finally located that. It is attached to "fins" but bottom of it is pulled away somewhat. Problem?
  • Yes, make sure the freeze sensor is pushed in all the way.

If your A/C has run more than a season or two, suggest you perform this A/C Cleanup/Tuneup.
If you have a Wall Thermostat (usually with Ducted systems), the A/C should have a Freeze Sensor that'll stop it from freezing over. It seems common for them to fall out of position.
If your A/C isn't ducted (control knobs on the unit itself) no Freeze Sensor. Best to run the system on the High Cool setting vs. Low Cool.
Being sure it's clean and running at High Cool will very likely solve the freezing.
