Air dryer rapid cycling

(I tried to search for relevant topics, but didn't find any that were helpful)

My air dryer purges about once in two minutes, which does not seem normal. I have done the following:

1. Listened for large leaks, and heard nothing over the engine sound. After a light air discharge of about ten seconds, no air sounds when engine is turned off.
2. Watched pressure gauge for several minutes with engine off. The gauge slowly moves to no pressure in about 36-48 hours.
3. Watched the pressure gauge with brakes applied. The gauge drops about 15 pounds on application of brakes, and does not visibly move in four minutes.
4. Rebuilt the air dryer - It was apparently original. No shocking build up of oil or moisture inside.
5. Watched the air gauge in normal driving. It does not move significantly.
6. Noted a small leak when the air brake "button" is slightly sideways. Still takes about 24 hours for system to leak down. When running, the air dryer purges similarly when brake on or off.

I am thinking an overactive governor, in need of replacement. I welcome your thoughts.

  • Can you take some PICS of the dryer & govenor? Thanks!
  • I replaced the air governor the other day. Prior, the air pressure would go to 120 and stay there. Now it will drop to about 90 before the air pump returns it to 120, which fits my understanding of how it should operate.

The air dryer still purges frequently. Still researching, and looking for ideas.

PS Big thanks to the builder for putting the governor right next to the compartment door. Less transferring some fittings, it was a 5 minute job. On my previous coach, it took longer than that just to FIND the governor.

A governor is under $20, and your DP will not release the parking brake if it fails. Buy a spare.
  • Keep us posted on what you find Matt. I just upgraded my coach with full air.
  • Thanks JD

The purge valve was replaced with the air dryer rebuild, though that alone is no guarantee that is is not at fault. I would think the purge valve would be leaking (hissing like crazy) if it were causing such a leak. Am I correct?

My previous coach had the same symptom, and a rebuild of the air dryer fixed it.

Maybe the unloader valve? I cannot reckon the function of the valve to the symptom.

Which engine? CAT? Neighbor had that happen and it took a rebuild of a small part, want to say Purge Valve (?). Been awhile and he no longer has the coach to look at.
