AM Radio is dead

My '15 Ram 1500 with the Uconnect 8.4AN radio has no AM output. No sound at all. Doing a scan finds no stations at all. Suggestions? Should I pull a fuse or disconnect the battery? It's not that I use it that often, but there are times when local news, or immediate traffic or weather reports would be nice.

  • So... The only reason I brought this up was because of those signs on the side of the interstate (locally) that recommended tuning to a particular AM frequency to learn about traffic/road/weather conditions ahead. When I tried, nada.

Just a bit ago, I went out to my travel trailer and tried that AM tuner. I know it's connected to a good antenna that I installed myself. Well, it pulled in a couple stations, but just barely. So back to the truck, this time with the volume on max and manually tuning to each incremental location. I did get a little noise here and there on frequencies that should supposedly be broadcasting. I think the sensitivity is just not very good. No go for AM.

    Thanks for the feedback! :)

not yet. talk radio in general and Rush Limbaugh in particular have
given the AM band a new life. syndicated programming is all well and good but what has changed is the disappearance of local programming on small town radio. i still enjoy listening to small town AM radio but more and more one station sounds like another.
  • Yeah, FM works perfectly. I knew I should have included that tidbit. Guess I'll try disconnecting the battery since I can't find a fuse to pull.
  • You wouldn’t want to test it around here. No AM stations for years.

There are a few components unique to the AM or FM band and it is possible for one to fail wile the other works

Question does your radio have a line in? and does that work?

On my Class A the Am/FM antenna on the roof is.. well .. Not worth much.. My Effective range is close to how far I can throw a snowball. In august (Ok so I joke a bit).

I use an inverter to power my smart phone so I do not get a ground loop issues (lots of nosie) then feed the audio out from the cell to the AUX in on the dash. (See option 2 below if you don't have an aux in but FM works) Point the browser to WTWW.US then hit LISTEN tab and Transmitter 2 (html) and enjoy "The Greatest Hits of All times"

WTWW (We Transmit World Wide) is a shortwave station (5085 KHz) or 3 in Lebanon TN (T2 is 5085) YOu may find the ads a bit strange (I don't stores I shop) but The music is good.. THey have a new Instant Request system too (different tab use a different device or open new tab to use it) Kind of neat.

Option 2: If your FM works but no aux in you can get a small FM Transmitter at most Audio / Best buy Truck stop stores designed specifically to handle that problem.

Oh my car also does Short wave and I can do it in the motor home too.

that was my question, too. if FM is dead then that would suggest an antenna connection issue. otherwise you could try to reset the vehicle computer by disconnecting the battery for 30-minutes. that has worked for me for other issues on my Jeep Liberty.
