ANALOG AC METER SEE DEFECTIVE ALT STATOR DIODES

Yep, with an AC voltmeter with a needle, a reading of 2.0 volts or greater is a sure way to tell if a stator is open or shorted, and/or one of the rectifiers is open or shorted. The reading -must be- taken at the alternator and not at the battery.

Cheap, tiny analog multimeters work fine for this. Digital readings are not reliable UNLESS you first have a reading available that was taken while the alternator was charging hard. Again this reading should be taken right at the alternator. Set the meter to AC volts lowest scale than hope for the best. Some rectified WYE alternators cannot be read digitally. The digits scramble like they went through a blender.

  • Almot I have had badddd luck using digital for this because the sampling rate is 1-2 times per second. It sees peak to peak but it isn't a scope. The blur of changing numbers I cannot interpret. I haven't checked all AC digital meters but my meters cannot even make up their mind on a good alternator. When alternators are charging hard the waveform is obscured by voltage/+?/frequency. I am going to get a couple of meters to take with me when I tackle the Harbor Fright 500-amp carbon pile battery tester. Why fit it to the carbon pile? So the battery can be loaded down and maximum waveform amplitude can be established. Both meters, amperage and voltage will become digitalized. The AC meter of course, will be analog.

When doing this test, any large capacitors must be disconnected out of circuit. Power supplies, chargers, big amplifiers, etc. Capacitors dampen ripple so readings are made muddy. The .47 or 1.2 uf cap inside the alternator are not big enough to absorb bad ripple.
  • For Techhies...

ALLELECTRONICS dot com, has analog panel meters. 10VAC for $12.00

This is a stare-and-compare learning curve. Connect meter to alternator and see what the needle does and does not do when the alternator is working hard. Then if you suspect a problem, reconnect and if the needle is registering quite a bit higher, you have ripple and that means component failure within the alternator.
