Another two battery question

I have two 12 batteries in parallel on my travel trailer. My questions is whether I am better off "saving" one battery by disconnecting it when hooked to shore power for months at a time or am I better off leaving them both connected all the time?

  • I agree with smk. Leave them connected together in parallel when using them and charging them.

This is what is balanced and best for twin twelve volt batteries.

  • Peukert effect says it is best to leave connected during use and charging.
If you disconnect for storage would be time to separate.
    Also separate if testing condition.
  • I'd leave them connected. I do. When on shore power, you really aren't using your batteries anyway and aren't draining them...The batts may be "moderating" the 12V current slightly but there is no advantage to disconnecting them.

Your converter should be properly maintaining them.

If you let one battery get weaker and weaker by use while the other one is disconnected, then when you reconnect that other battery, the weaker one will pull down the less used battery. It is never good to connect dissimilar batteries together. For the same reason it is never good to replace just one battery of a pair...
