Antenna upgrade

I have a standard crank up type antenna, not sure of make or model, but it does not perform very well. I might pull in 4 channels with it sitting here in my yard. We had friends stay with us last summer and parked their trailer right next to mine in the yard and he was able to pull in 15 channels. His looks just like my antenna does but I never looked real close to see any model numbers or differences. Mine burn out or something? or do I just need to upgrade mine? What would you all recommend?

The unit is 4 yrs old. I have not checked connections so......and yes I do know to turn on the booster. Looks like its nice today so up on the roof it is. I know there really is nothing to go bad on the antenna itself so I will check the booster and connections before I go all drastic. Thanks for the replies.

Please note the BOOSTER is inside the batwing antenna. The WALL BOX that has the BUTTON to push is only the power supply control for the booster amplifier. The 12VDC runs up the COAX along with the TV signals

All you can really check is to see if the 12VDC is on the connecter that plugs into the BATWING Antenna...

You also have to point the BATWING Antenna to the transmitting antenna from the local town... The DIPOLE SIDE is the front of the BATWING antenna..

If your crank-up BATWING looks like this with the small dipoles on it you have about as good as you can get...

  • Ken, ya gotta answer the question about the signal amplifier. :h
  • Check all outside connections for corrosion and a good clean and tight fit before replacing anything. Do the same inside and make sure booster is turned on. You don't say how old your antenna is but the new Winegard Sensar IV is about as good as it gets.
  • The coax cable (wiring) from the antenna to the TV may be bad or going bad and /or the signal amplifier may be going bad. Either of these can cause what you describe. You need to find out where the problem is before you can fix it or you can spend time and money and still have the same problem. I just had the badley weathered exterior coax replaced only to find my antenna amplifier actually cut out what signal there was when it was turned on. Fix was to replace the amplifier. Still have the old antenna which does not have much to go wrong.
  • They usually have an amplifier built in. Is it turned on?
Also may have poor coax connections.
