Thanks everyone. Do you think not following the rule of all charging/load to the same positive terminal is what caused the corrosion on the top battery?
I need to test them. Maybe one of them is still strong.
The corrosion is caused by acid getting up on the terminals. The corrosion is lead-sulfate and is water soluble... it will wash off.
Acid gets up out of the battery for several possible reasons. Overfilled with water, over charging, bad cell, broken seal on the terminal to case.
No need to test, they are both shot. Good for core charge exchange on a new battery.
Once you have new batteries in place, the wires are cleaned up and sorted out then it is time to evaluate how the solar and other charging is actually working. Also need to review your maintenance routine so the new batteries can last 5+ years.
