Atwood Water Heater No Gas Operation

My 10 gal atwood water heater will not fire on gas. It sparks and tries to ignite but just wont go. I don't smell gas at all when it is trying to light, it just tries 3 times and goes into fault. Should I be able to hear the gas solenoid turn on, and how can I test it?

  • Check for 12V DC at gas solenoids while spark electrode is firing.

Red wire from ECO to solenoid then to black wire (Grd)

Also check that all grounds are clean/tight
Main gas orifice is not plugged
Spark electrode gap is 1/8" and no cracks in ceramic insulator (unplug red wire on ECO to gas valve. Stick a fiber washer (some type of insulating material) between electrode and ground rod....fire unit. If you see a spark jumping from the ceramic to the ground rod or bracket, replace the spark probe
  • First check for spider webs in the line. Second I always have to light the stove and let it burn for a minute or so, Then try again. Make sure you are careful with open flames and propane. If the stove and furnace light most likely you have a block in the gas tube of the water heater check it out good.
