Awning Roller Tube

Since I'm on a "roll", another victim on my Lake Tahoe trip was my awning tube.... It was only suppose to snow for an hour, 8 hours later, my awning was covered in about 6" of snow(yep, I know, should have never had it out, that's another story.) It took me about 2 hours to get all the snow off and of course, it now has a slight bow in the tube. It's still operational but a tad difficult to deploy because of the bow. Any thoughts as to bending it back...I have a thought of setting a couple of 2x4's in the center and trying to pull down on both ends to get a somewhat straighter tube?
  • Just wanted to come back and say we did give the Zip Dee instruction's a try with a few modifications. All in all it worked pretty good, we were able to take some bowing out of it but I think we will do just a bit more next time my brother is up here. Thanks to all!
  • Ahh Yes, it is aluminum (Zip Dee) and I did figure on using a section of 2x4 to prevent that one big tweek in the middle. Thank You for all the suggestions.

If your awning tube is alum you can straighten it fairly easily. If it's steel then it can be done but it's hard not to get a kink in it. Yes you can do it with two big guys and a 2x4 but you need a 2-3' one to put on top of the 2x4 to keep from bending in one spot.
  • Guess I got lucky. A couple weeks ago we woke to several inches of very heavy snow on the awning. It was seriously sagging but no permanent bends. I agree with propping it up in the middle and adding weight to the ends. Good luck!

Extend it again, but stop just short, so the tube is bowed up. Let it snow another 6 inches. See if that helps? :h

Not a bad idea....maybe I'll just go up to Tahoe next year and wait for it to snow!! LoL
