Awning Strut/Damper won't Compress

We use a thing we made at work. You need some leverage. I done know what your frame work looks like but unhook it some where if you can and then hook the shock. We use to pull them to gather and hook them with a long flat strip of metal with a hook at the end. It look kind of dangerous.
