battery and wireing info please

Yes I totally agree a voltage meter is a requirement so that is also on the list for payday (once a month). I asked my husband for his and he said it is not working. I will take a pic and try to send it to you Harvey - thank you - going to take pic now

The easy way to show pictures in a post is to upload the picture to a free online photo site such as photobucket.com. The sites have an easy way to get an IMG link to the picture, which you simply paste into a post. If that doesn't work out, exchange email addresses with someone here via the forum messaging system and just email the picture you want posted. I would be pleased to do it.

I am fairly experienced with electricity but I would not be hooking those wires up to a battery without a voltmeter and some checking. If the wires are supposed to be connected to batteries they should already have 12 V on them from the converter in the RV. It might be that a battery isolator or some other device goes in there and the "light" wires are control wires.

It all might be obvious to experts here once they see a photo. If you have means of editing the photo, it probably would simplify the discussion if you put numbers on the wires.

Without good pictures of what you have or a wiring schematic, you're only going to get good guesses on which wire goes where.

Since you are about to connect a lot of electrical devices, a handheld multimeter would be one tool that is almost necessary. With a meter, it is simple to ascertain which wires have the correct polarity.

Thank you Roy - I have been researching what would be the right batteries for what I'm wanting to do which is how I found this web site. I have decided on a pair of 6v 220 golf cart batteries with a 45 watt harbor freight solar kit to start with and it seems like expanding the kit as needed would be a great place to start. I have done countless hours of research on youtube lol I was helped greatly by the forums I read on this site to come to my decision on the 6v220 batteries. Then once I decided I started investigating how to hook them up and saw the how to do that. Then I started checking the wires on the trailer and it appears that maybe the 2 small gauge black wires will connect to the white battery cable and positive has a small gauge black wire connected to it already but the end of that feeds into a small plastic connection fitting of some sort and a red positive on the other side of that needs a small gauge black wire would go there also but need confirmation

I would just hook up the two large cable first. i think i am reading they are large size cables one is black and one is white...

Hand trace the WHITE cable first and it should go to the trailer frame ground. This will be your NEGATIVE 12VDC cable. Mark it with something as -12VDC...

The other LARGE BLACK cable will be your POSITIVE 12VDC cable coming from the Power Distribution Panel where you converter hooks up to it. Mark this one + 12VDC.

You will need to trace out the other wires and find the pair of wires coming from some other appliance or device.

The normal wire colors are Black for positive and White for frame ground. But as I said earlier two worlds are at play here being the RV TRAILER world and the AUTOMOTIVE WORLD on which wire colors are used. If can find the pairs coming from a device or appliance they may be BLACK and WHITE wires going together or RED and BLACK wires going together.

This gets alot folks into trouble when wiring back up haha...

As for as solar goes a good starting plan is to install 120WATTS of solar panel along with their solar charge boards which will need to connect to a battery system.

A good choice of affordable batteries is to get the two GC2 GOLF CART 6VDC batteries from SAMs CLUB or COSTCO. You need somewhere for the solar power to go to have it available when you need to use it...

The two 6VDC Golf Cart Batteries will have around 220AHs capacity and would be a great battery system to go with a 120WATT Solar system.

here is a quick wiring diagram on how to connect up the 6VDC batteries in series or the 12VDC batteries in parallel.


Here is a quick 30AMP Electrical flow diagram that might be interesting for you showing a typical electrical setup for the RV Trailer.


There are lots of little things to learn here and it would be great if you had someone close by that is aware of how all of this works to get you started in the right direction.

ALot is lost in trying to pass along this much info over forums like this. Everyone has their own way of describing things (myself included) haha

I can take a pic of it. Is that something we can do on this site ? I am sorry I am so very green :) but Im trying to fix that. It was like that when we got in in like 03. We just never had a need to mess with it. I do appreciate your trying to help me. Can I post a pic on here to for you ?
