Ok, so I should only see about 50% max of what the alternator is rated at? I have seen it up around 70, but that's just after the engine starts, then it dwindles down quickly.
If your starting battery is pretty well charged, the alternator output will generally fall off pretty quickly, basically no matter how low the house battery is. To get more out of my alternator before a drive i used to flip the switch that connected the house and chassis batteries for a while to move some amp hours over. With the chassis battery down some amp hours, I found the alternator put out a bit more for a bit longer. Mex can tell you more about how the circuits decide how many amps to send for how long.
