We had the same thing happen to the battery in our truck camper back in July. Smelled awful and was very warm. I unplugged the power, let it sit for a couple of hours. Then wearing safety glasses, a long sleeve shirt and thick leather gloves I removed the old one and let it sit in the yard overnight to cool down before I took it in to buy a replacement.
