It can be real simple,.....no voltmeters, no nothin !
If there is only minimal dimming of an incadesant lite (maybe flor & led too, not sure) when you turn a faucet on, the batteries are fine yet.
If the pump runs quite slow, and severely dims a light, it time to shut down, or recharge. KISS

So assuming someone doesn't have $200 worth of dignostic equipment, but only a way to check voltage, if the reading drops to say 11.8v but rebounds above 12 when the load is removed, is any damage being done to the battery at that low voltage with the load applied?
