Bent crude tops 60 a barrel

In the states, fuel tax is per gallon not per dollar, so the price has no impact on the tax collected per gallon sold.

In the People's Republic (at least) SALES TAX is compounded on the aggregate total of merchandise with federal and state fuel tax ADDED IN. Taxing the tax.

It’s hard to talk about the price of oil without talking about the price of energy alternatives as they are tied together.

I have 3kW of solar on my house producing about 5,000 kWh each year.

California is currently at 29 percent renewables. 41 percent if large hydro is included as renewable.

I look at an electric car as a 'feel good' thing. Makes a person feel good by not DIRECTLY contributing to the carbon footprint, but they still are, indirectly.

The only alternative would be solar panel recharging but I've yet to see a car festooned with panels going down the road. Maybe someday but probably not in my lifetime.

Not sure a 100 buck 4 banger beater would get lower per mile cost in as much as most 'beaters' I've seen lack even minimal maintenance. So a beater would not be cost efficient. Besides, who wants to drive a beater anyway, let alone use a beater for a toad.

Good morning sidecar. I think it has a lot do to with where the power comes from. So a province or state or even Country that gets all its power from Hydro for example has much better results than one that gets its power from coal and of course there are many. The other thing is, grids in most modern countries are getting cleaner every year. I believe you are in the US so using that as a reference, coal is now only providing about a third of the US grid power. (not an expert, just repeating something I read) Because the emissions of the vehicle depend on the grid this is a good thing as every time the grid gets 1 percent cleaner the vehicle gets one percent cleaner. Electric vehicles can be part of the solution, not the entire solution. They are not yet suitable for everyone's needs but are pretty good at what they do.

Pump prices here took another 4 cent jump this morning.

We may be 'awash' in light sweet crude in this country, but the powers to be (petro-chemical companies and refiners control the pricing and the 'flow' to retail buyers.

All about profit, just like any industry. I'd punch a well out back (we have oil underground here), but the average cost to drill is around a million bucks a hole and the product coming out, still has to be catalytic cracked to be useful.

That is cold weather mileage. In the summer (with the ac on climate control, I can get over 40.5. It averages just at 40 mpg combined city and highway.. in the summer.

It's a 2014 Ford Focus hatchback SE Flex fuel with a 5 speed. I have LRR tires and I keep up with the maintenance. No 10K oil changes for me. Every 5K and a new air filter every year and I mind the tire pressures too. Ford estimated the combined mileage at 37 but I've always got more. Has one of those upshift lights and I run it in economy mode and short shift it all the time.

Very happy with the mileage and it's a comfortable car with plenty of room inside. I'd buy another no qualms, well maybe buy another. Mine was assembled at Wayne Assembly in Wayne, Michigan, but Fords is moving production to Mexico and being a UAW / Fords family, I won't buy a Mexican assembled vehicle.

I think it's 180 horsepower (not sure), but it's a GDI engine, 4 cylinder, transverse mounted, front wheel drive and it's loaded with stuff I don't really need...lol

Very happy with it plus you can flat tow it with the 5 speed box.

The mileage is based on the on board fuel computer and the continuous readout on the dash. I assume it's correct.

Well it definetly is working out well for you. Many people don't pay attention to tire pressure and it makes a big difference on mileage. For those of us driving electric vehicles it can make a huge difference in the range. We have a leaf that has about 180 to 200 KM of range. SO when you start out with a limited range vehicle 10 percent can make a 20 KM distance change. In our daily commuting we are never more than a third of that but for those on longer commutes it could make or break your day.

Driving style is another big factor and if you are beating the EPA rating you have that dialed in as well. We usually beat the rated numbers as well depending on conditions.
