Hi BFL13,
Because with the mono--the volts are lower but the raw amps coming into the controller are higher. Which means the lower voltage allows the controller to run just a smidgen more efficiently.

I will not ask how come MPPT, which magically makes amps out of volts, does better with fewer volts! That way lies madness. :(
